Our Story: When Screen Time Took Over
When my son was four years old, I began noticing something that deeply concerned me. He had become strongly attached to his iPad, toys struggled to hold his attention, and imaginative play felt harder for him.
I didn’t want screens to become the center of his childhood, so I started looking for ways to create more room for hands-on, creative play.
I wasn’t searching for a perfect parenting system. I simply wanted toys and routines that gave him more opportunities to build, imagine, problem-solve, and play on his own.
Discovering Montessori-Inspired Play
During that search, I came across Montessori-inspired toys. What immediately stood out was their simplicity.
Instead of doing the entertaining for the child, many Montessori-inspired toys invite the child to participate: stacking, sorting, matching, balancing, building, repeating, and trying again.
No flashing lights. No loud music. No batteries required.

Why Simpler Toys Made a Difference in Our Home
As we introduced more open-ended toys into our routines, I saw my son spend more time building, creating, and playing independently. That experience shaped the kind of products I eventually wanted LYTL® to offer.
The lesson for me was simple: a toy doesn’t have to do everything for a child to be valuable. Sometimes its value comes from leaving enough room for the child to think, experiment, and create.
From a Personal Problem to the Start of LYTL®
I loved the simplicity behind Montessori-inspired play, but I still felt like something was missing. I wanted toys that felt calm in our home, were versatile enough to use in different ways, were easy for parents to care for, and used materials I felt confident bringing around my children.
That became the starting point for LYTL®.
What began as a personal search for my own family slowly became a bigger idea: create toys for modern families who want meaningful play without adding more noise, flashing lights, batteries, or unnecessary overwhelm.
How That Experience Shaped the Toys We Make
Today, LYTL® toys are designed around the same qualities I was looking for as a mom: simple use, open-ended possibilities, calming colors, and clear developmental purpose.
- Open-ended play: toys that can be stacked, sorted, matched, balanced, built with, or used in imaginative play.
- Calmer design: earth-toned colors without batteries, flashing lights, or loud sounds.
- Practical materials: many LYTL® toys use BPA-free, food-grade silicone, while select products incorporate natural beech wood.
- Clear age guidance: every product has its own recommended minimum age so families can choose for the stage their child is in now.
Some LYTL® toys begin at 6+ months, others at 12+ months, and products with smaller or removable components are recommended for ages 3+.
LYTL® Became About More Than Screen-Free Play
Reducing screen-heavy play may have been part of what started the journey, but LYTL® grew into something deeper for me. I wanted the brand to encourage children not only in how they play, but also in how they see themselves.
That is why positive affirmations became part of LYTL®. Words such as I am kind, I am brave, I am capable, I am loved, and I am unique reflect the kind of truth and encouragement I want surrounding children as they grow. You can read more about that in our guide to positive affirmations for kids.
